When to Go

The seasons are distinct in Switzerland so it’s important to plan your time accordingly. Winter brings chilly temperatures but it’s also peak season for skiers or any lover of snow sports. While summer brings in warmer temperatures, longer days, and longer hours of business operation, it also brings the summer vacationing crowds. Spring/early summer and fall are probably the most desirable times to visit, with highs reaching the mid-seventies and minimal crowds. Several popular art, music, and cultural festivals occur throughout Switzerland as well, primarily during the spring and summer. These festivals include Carnival in Basel, the Swiss Yodelling Festival, and the cow parade in Lauterbrunnen.

Overview

Switzerland is teeming with activities such as hiking, biking, fishing, and skiing. It is an ideal location for a road trip or even to view by the window of a train, since the railway system is reliable and often just as picturesque. Take the opportunity to explore skiing from the Zermatt Ski Resort, one of the highest in the world, or hike the numerous trails that wind through the Swiss Alps. Aside from the outdoor activities, Switzerland is also known for its cheese, chocolate, and fondue. There are also several unique festivals throughout the year, honoring the culture and history of this uniquely breathtaking country.
